Maximilian Diesenberger is the head of division of Historical Identity Research at the Institute for Medieval Research, Austrian Academy of Sciences. Dr Diesenberger received his PhD in Medieval History at the University of Vienna and later defended his habilitation thesis in Medieval History/Auxiliary Sciences at the same institution. Dr Diesenberger’s research interests include medieval identity formation and social cohesion, and more broadly the cultural, social and religious history of the medieval period. The Vienna strand of the UNUP project, ‘Terminologies and Concepts of Group Belonging’, builds on Dr Diesenberger’s interests in these fields, exploring how tenth and early eleventh-century authors and actors faced present challenges by using concepts and terms of identity from the Carolingian past to help restructure the social and political order.
