Born 4.5.1840 eldest son of Edward Thompson, Jamaica and Elizabeth Hayhurst Poole.

Career

Studied at Oxford University.

Assistant at the British Museum 1861. Keeper at the Department of Manuscripts 1878-1888. Principal Librarian 1888 - 1909 (retired). K.C.B. [Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath] 1905. G.C.B. [Knight Grand Cross of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath] 1909.
