Born 26.10.1736 only son of Rev. Thomas Stockdale, vicar of Branxton and Curate of Cornhill, Northumberland and Dorothy Collingwood.[Minister]

Career

Joined Army 1756, left it in November 1757.

Ordained deacon 1759. Joined circle of Johnson, Browne and Goldsmith in London. Edited Critical Review and lived life of a litterateur. Chaplain to H.M.S. Resolution 1773-1776. Curate of Hincworth, Hertfordshire 1780-1783. Vicar of Lesbury and Long Houghton, Northumberland 1783 - 14.9.1811 (died, but according to F.J.G. Robinson in July 1968 died Alnwick 6.8.1812).
