Born 14.2.1831 son of James Stewart, farmer, Cordon, Abernethy, who may later have been coach hirer in Edinburgh and Jane Dudgeon.

Attended Edinburgh High School.

Career

Also at New College, Edinburgh - divinity student 1847-1850, 1850-1851 P and Glasgow University - M.D. C.M. 1866, D.D. 1893.

Explored Africa 1862-1864. Free Church and U.F. missionary, Lovedale 1865. [Missionary]

Established Livingstonia [Kondowe, Malawi]. - one of Livingstone’s companions on his African journeys.

Moderator, General Assembly of the Free church 1899.

Death

Died at Lovedale [South Africa] 21.12.1905.
