Birth/childhood

Born c.1755 son of Walter Riddell of Newhouse and Anne Riddell.

Career

Entered Army and by 1780 attained rank of Captain. [Soldier]

Succeeded father in 1788 and spent life in antiquarian pursuits. Patron of Robert Burns and composed airs for some of his songs. LL.D. Edinburgh 1794.
