Soldier - ensign 1814. Lieutenant 26th Regiment. Deputy Adjutant General Madras [now Chennai, India] 1843-1855. Commanded forces in Australia 1856-1861. Conducted war against Maoris [New Zealand] 1860-1861. General 1873. Retired 1877.
Knighted (K.C.B. [Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath]), 1861.
Brother in law of Thomas Chalmers, D.D.

Died 2.2.1879.
