Born 29.5.1856 son of John Peterson, merchant, Edinburgh and Grace Montford Anderson.

Had been a pupil of Donaldson at Edinburgh High School.

Career

Studied at Edinburgh University and elsewhere.

Assistant in Humanity, Edinburgh University 1879-1882.

Principal, University College, Dundee 1882-1895. [St Andrews University]

Principal McGill University 1895 - 1919.

Knighted.

Honorary degrees from twelve universities of which St Andrews was first. K.C.M.G. [Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George] 1915.

Publications on Classics - discovered 9th Century MS of Cicero’s speeches.

Death

Died at Hampstead 4.1.1921.
