Born 15.10.1749 son of James Gillespie, minister at St Andrews and Isobel Dick.

Career

Left St Andrews May 1769 on being accused of being father of Margaret Adamson’s unborn child, but denying it.

Going to East Indies, detained at London on account of shipwreck 10.3.1770 on being accused of fathering Margaret Buttercase’s natural son, James.

Purser of the ship Alfred in the British East India Co.’s Service [Honourable East India Company's Service] in 1776 when he presented a sea cocoanut to the University. [Soldier]
