Born May 1813 in Edinburgh.

Attended St George’s School, Young St., Edinburgh.

Career

Also at Edinburgh University.

While at Edinburgh University supported himself by private teaching and eventually became master at Circus Place School. Then head of English at Madras College, St Andrews. In 1841 he was appointed first Government Inspector of Schools in Scotland. Joined Free Church in 1843 and became Superintendent of Free schools. Was reappointed Inspector of Schools in Scotland when they became non-denominational. In 1850 he became proprietor and headmaster of Merchiston Castle School. [Teacher]

Death

Died 11.10.1856 at Edinburgh.
