Served an apprenticeship, then studied Edinburgh University 1775-1778 and London.

Surgeon Royal Navy 1778-1780. Practised Kirkcaldy 1780-1781. Surgeon Royal Navy 1781-1783. Soon thereafter back in Navy as manager of Naval Hospital, Mole, St Domingo until 1795. Surgeon General to Naval Hospital at Port Royal, Jamaica 1795-. [Doctor]
