Born 17.10.1744 son of Andrew Duncan, merchant and shipmaster Crail then St Andrews and Catherine Vilant [daughter of Professor William Vilant].

Went on one voyage as ship’s surgeon to China. Practised Edinburgh and extra academical lecturer. Professor of Physiology, Edinburgh University 1790 - 1821.
