Born 19.1.1817 son of Anthony Brownless of Bockingfold Manor, Goudhurst, Kent.

Career

M.R.C.S.Eng. 1841. F.R.C.S.Eng. 1884. L.S.A. 1841. M.D.(Melb.) [Melbourne] 1856. LL.D.(Melb.) [Melbourne] 1888. K.C.M.G. [Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George] 1893.

Practised in London 1842 - 1845, went to Liege, returned 1846 - 1849; retired from practice. Went to Australia. Practised in Melbourne. Founded medical school of University of Melbourne and was its first M.D.. For 29 years was Vice Chancellor then Chancellor 1887 to death [1887-3.12.1897]. [Doctor]
