Birth/childhood

Born 1763 son of David Brown, miller, Lochgelly, which is said to be his native place (James Brown Corr. EUL 258). But he is called son of John Brown , Tarvit Mill in Cupar TC Mins.

Career

Deputised for Professor Nicolas Vilant c. 1785 -1796. [St Andrews University]

Licensed by St Andrews presbytery 1789.

Minister at Dunino 1790 - 1796. Professor of natural philosophy Glasgow University 1796 - 1803 (retired), but only taught one session in Glasgow before returning to reside in St Andrews. Taught natural philosophy after coming back to St Andrews where he stayed until at least 1823. [University professor]

LL.D. M.C. Aberdeen 1796.

Death

Resided latterly in Edinburgh, where he died 3.11.1836.
