Born 30.11.1781 eldest son of James Berry, tenant, Hilltarvit and Isabel Tod. [Farmer]

Career

Also at Edinburgh University - medical student 1798 - 1801. L.R.C.S.E. 5.5.1801.

Became a ship’s surgeon, but soon gave up medicine and emigrated to Australia, where he amassed a large fortune. [Doctor]

Member of legislative council, New South Wales 1829 - . Member of upper house 1856 - 1861.

Death

Died Sydney [Australia] 17.9.1873.

His brother David bequeathed £100,000 to St Andrews University in implementation of his wishes. [This legacy was used to establish the University's Berry Chair of English Literature.]
