Birth/childhood

Born 22.10.1813 son of Alexander Bell of Newhall, Crail and Isabella Davidson.

Career

Became a civil servant at the Cape of Good Hope. Appointed Surveyor General 1848.

An able artist, many of whose works survive in South Africa.

Designed the Cape triangular postage stamps first issued 1853. Returned to Britain in 1873. F.R.S.E. 1878.

Death

Died Edinburgh 7.4.1882.
