Born 27.3.1753 son of Baillie Alexander Bell, barber, St Andrews and Margaret Robertson.

Career

Tutor in Virginia 1774 -1781. Ordained in Church of England. In India 1787 - 1796. Rector Swanage 1801 - 1809. Master Sherburn Hospital, Durham 1809 -. [Teacher, minister]

Involved all his life in organising schools on the Madras system. Left £120,000 for educational purposes. Chair of education in St Andrews University founded by his trustees in 1876. F.R.S.E. 1800.

Death

Died 27.1.1832.
