Commentary
- Line75 - 96

Salcedo Coronel
Analysis
- You note how Salcedo Coronel is unhappy with
Góngora's imagery here on the grounds of improbability that
there is an animal who carries the carbuncle stone on its
forehead. But is that in fact the reference? Consider the
context: the fire in the distance is being likened to a light
that guides. This light is expressed in a periphrasis:
Piedra - tiara de animal tenebroso. Let us test
out an obvious example of a light that guides: the Pole Star.
You can consult star-maps in NOTES, and you will see that the
Pole Star shines in the constellation of the Little Bear {so we
have an animal tenebroso, the latter adjective
referring to its dusky, brown coat as well as to its night-time
appearance}, and on the tip of its tail (hence,
indigna, when we think of such a powerful star in the
heavens being located on the tail of the beast.]. The reference
to the carro, as if the constellation were a wagon
carrying the light of the constellation in the northern sky, is
appropriate, for it reminds us that the Little Bear is also
called el Carro Menor [ in English The Lesser
Wain or Charles's Wain]. So the associations seem to fall
into place around the Pole Star. But Góngora's periphrasis
goes further, as he evokes tradición
apócrifa to justify calling the precious stone a
tiara. Salcedo Coronel takes apócrifa
rather loosely to mean sin autoridad, but it signifies
more precisely non-canonical books of the Bible. And indeed in
the Apocryphal Gospel of John the Evangelist we hear of a story
whereby the stars, sun and moon are fragments of a celestial
crown once worn by
the angel that was over the waters
at the time of Creation. The handful of allusions thrown out in the periphrasis form a coherent, imaginative whole that taps the magic of astronomy. - The carbunclo that so offended Salcedo Coronel, appears in line 83, associated closely with fire {its etymology is with carbón, according to Covarrubias}, and here likened to with the Pole Star {Norte de su aguja}. The sea-imagery receives one last recall in the following line. The sky animals are then taken over by a real dog and a real fire which takes shape in the poetry as a crown, but not so mysterious as the previous celestial tiara..
- Vulcano: under NOTES you will find further material on the homely god who stands for fire and grubby toil.

Flora
. Covarrubias, Tesoro. The illustrations are representative of the widespread motif of Flora in seventeenth-century painting, to convey the luxuriance of nature. The classical motif is adapted to the sensibility of the age, i.e. it serves to praise the countryside, to celebrate man's cultivation of nature and the enjoyment of the fruits.

Vulcano
Vulcan: in Góngora's verse, the god, a homely type, is being used to stand for fire, since his trade was that of the smith. You see him in the illustration, a painting by Rubens, which shows his association with fire and the grime and toil of his forge; Rubens captures the god's practical nature.
Vulcan in his forge, by Rubens. He hammers out a thunderbolt; a shield and armour can be seen.

Skymap
In the skymap opposite you see the northern constellations, among them Ursa Maior, the Great Bear, and Ursa Minor, the Little Bear. It is in the latter that the Pole Star is located, at the tip of the bear's tail. You see the small animal immediately above the greater bear. The Sun and Moon are just there for effect.
