Today’s podcast brings us to the end of Series 1 in the History of Psychiatry podcast series. In the space of 44 episodes, we have explored psychiatry from its very beginnings, from mad-doctors and witch hunts, to modern day drug treatments and new therapies. We’ve considered how mental illness has been understood and described in the past, and what it meant for families affected by mental illness. We’ve looked at how mental illness has been treated, through the growth of asylums to community care. We’ve visited Bedlam more than once, and reflected on the importance of how mental illness has been portrayed and presented in modern and historical media.

We hope you have enjoyed this series of podcasts, and that you have gained something from listening to them. Perhaps you feel inspired to learn more, to enrol for a more formal course in the subject, or just to find out more in a way that suits you. You’ll find plenty of further reading and useful links on our web pages.

In the meantime, we would like to hear from you. We’ve had lots of feedback through the course of the series, by email, Twitter and Facebook, and of course, we would love to continue to hear from you through those channels – keep the conversation going!

We would also be very grateful if you would take the time to fill in a short survey about the series. The survey will only take a few minutes to complete, and there is a prize of an Amazon voucher worth £50 for the first response drawn at random, with two runner-up prizes of a voucher worth £25.

In our next series of podcasts, Rab will explore the ‘Voice of the Mad’ – in other words the patient experience in the past. For centuries, sufferers have sought to understand the darkness, distress, and dissolution of their own minds, as well as the successes and failures of the carers they encountered and the therapies they experienced to manage their despair. Individually and collectively, their journeys bring unique insights into mental illness and its treatment.

The new series will start shortly – keep an eye on this web site for further details.

In the meantime, we hope you have enjoyed Series 1, and we look forward to hearing from you.
