History shows us where we have been. Yet the lessons it offers are not simply examples of what to emulate and what to avoid. Some time back, the archivist of Bethlem Hospital wrote that there are few ideas in psychiatry that have not been round at least once before during the last 500 years. This podcast shows what understanding historic change can do to help those who frame modern welfare policy: history can help illuminate opportunities and constraints by exploring differences and similarities.
