Agustín Zamorano

Biography

Juan Agustín Zamorano (1798-1842) was as soldier, a military engineer with the Mexican Army and a printer. He served with the cadets during the War of Independence and served in Monterrey, California between 1831 and 1836. He is remembered mainly for being the foremost printer in California. Amongst works he printed were a diverse range from official papers, circulars, and books including Manifiesto a la República Mexicana by José Figueroa (1835). He was promoted to military commander of Baja California (1839-40) and eventually named as Inspector of New California in 1842. He died a few days after he arrived at the port San Diego, California in this same year.
