Francisco Vital Fernández

Lifespan: (1802 – 1850)
Profession: Regular army officer
Place of birth: Ciudad Victoria

Biography

Francisco Vital Fernández was an army officer who played a prominent political role in his home province of Tamaulipas. Having fought alongside Santa Anna against Isidro Barradas' Spanish expeditionary forces during the campaign of Tampico of 1829, Vital Fernández went on to support the Plan of Jalapa of 4 December that year. He rose to the rank of Brigadier General in 1833 and served both as governor and commander general of Tamaulipas repeatedly at different junctures throughout the 1830s and 1840s. During the Mexican-American War (1846-48) he moved the state government to Tula, abandoning Ciudad Victoria to the advancing U.S. forces of generals Quitman, Taylor, and Patterson. He died assassinated on 4 March 1850 in the Rancho de los Ebanos, near Palmillas.
