Gabriel Valencia

Lifespan: (1799 – 1848)
Profession: Regular army officer
Place of birth: Ciudad de México

Biography

Gabriel Valencia was born in Mexico City in 1799 and joined the Royalist forces in Tulancingo as a cadet on 9 March 1811 with the War of Independence having already been raging for several months. He joined the Army of the Three Guarantees following the Plan of Iguala in 1821 and participated in several engagements in the Tierra Caliente. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1823, succeeding in rising to Brigadier General by 1831. He supported Santa Anna's 1832 pronunciamiento cycle against President Anastasio Bustamante's first government. He participated in the Texan Campaign 1835-36 as well as the battle of Acajete of 3 May 1839 in which he was responsible for the government's victory over the pronunciado forces of Jose Urrea and Jose Antonio Mejia. He was made Division General soon after Acajete. In 1840, at the head of the Ciudadela garrison in Mexico City he stood by Bustamante's government and was instrumental in quelling the pronunciamiento of 15 July 1840. A year later, however, he was one of the leaders of the Triangular Revolt that ended Bustamante's second term in office. Although he never rose to a position of political power he was able to amass a significant fortune, purchasing the Hacienda de Tepujaco. He fought in the Mexican-American War (1846-48) being notoriously defeated in the battle of Padierna of 19-20 August 1847. He died a year later at the age of forty-nine.
