Mauricio Ugarte

Biography

Mauricio Ugarte (1803-1853) was a soldier born in 1803 in San Antonio Béjar, Texas. He was a cadet in 1818. In 1821 he seconded the Plan of Iguala, however in 1823, when in the army of Chihuahua he supported the Plan of Casa Mata. Ugarte marched to Tampico with the aim of fighting the 1829 invasion of Isidrio Barradas. On his return to Chihuahua he supported the Plan of Jalapa. He became a lieutenant in the active company of Chihuahua in 1830. He fought the Apache Indians for a period of some years and was twice political chief and military commander of what was known as Paso del Norte (today Ciudad Juárez). In 1845 he exercised political leadership in Paso del Norte for the third time. And in January 1846 took over political leadership in Chihuahua after a military putsch. General Mariano Paredes y Arrillaga named him Departmental Commander. In 1846 he joined in the rallying of forces to resist the U.S. intervention. He participated in the battle of Sacramento of 28 February 1847. He was taken prisoner by General Sterling Price in Villa de Rosales in March 1848, although he was set free in April. In 1850, he was sub-inspector of military colonies and in 1852 chief accountant of the ministry of finance. His life ended in 1853.
