José de Ugarte

Biography

José de Ugarte (1803-1877) was a soldier who was born and died in Mexico City. He began his career at a very young age, taking part in some very challenging battles. He was the representative of the Departmental Assembly of Michoacán in 1843 and as the longest serving member he was responsible for the State Government from March to May 1844 and from May to July 1845. He was promoted to general in 1853. His loyalty to Santa Anna led him into government and resulted in him serving as Commander General of Michoacán in 1853 and 1854. He fought against the Revolution of Ayutla, and against the Constitution of 1857. He was Prefect and Commander of Michoacán during the second Empire as well as Director General of the Mexican Police. His life ended in 1877.
