José Mariano de Salas

Biography

José Mariano de Salas (1797-1867) was a soldier born in Mexico City. He began as a cadet in 1813 in the Regiment of the Puebla Infantry. He fought against the Insurgents and gained his first military grades. He supported the Plan of Iguala of 1821. Salas fought in Tampico against General Isidrio Barradas expedition in 1829 and was secretary to General Gabriel Valencia. During the Texan campaign of 1836 Salas mounted an attack against the Fort of el Alamo, participated in the action of Llano Perdido and was responsible for withdrawing his troops to Matamoros when Santa Anna was made prisoner following the battle of San Jacinto. In the Revolution of 15 July 1840, he was amongst the first troops to present themselves in la Ciudadela; and march toward the Palace with the column of attack that resisted the revolt. Salas was Head of Staff and Chief of the Armies of the North during the Mexican-American War (1846 – 1848) and he was captured in Padierna. In 1859, Salas was President of the War Tribunal and Chief of the Special Corps of Estado Mayor. He was a caudillo of the revolution proclaimed in the Plan of la Ciudadela on 4 August 1846, taking the Government of the Republic on the following day. On 23 December the same year, he handed the reigns of power over to Valentín Gómez Farías. Salas returned to the post of member of the Executive Power from 21-23 January 1859. He was Chief Military Officer of the Army of the Capital from 1-15 June 1863 and again member of the Executive Power from 21-23 January 1859. His life ended in Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico City in 1867.
