José María Sandoval

Biography

José María Sandoval (1799-1840) was a soldier born in Valladolid, Morelia. In September 1812 he joined the Patriots of Morelia as an Urban Soldier, in order to fight against the insurgent forces. When the insurgency triumphed he continued on in the military joining the forces of the Three Guarantees. He was commissioned in the Artillery division and became an instructor. He was capital cashier of the Hunting Battalion of Valladolid, Batallón Cazadores de Valladolid. Sandoval was also Major Official of the Ministry of War and Navy. He was amongst the pronunciados who were against Iturbide in 1822-23. He was already a Colonel when he became Commander and Governor of Chiapas, from December 1837-February 1840. He died in 1840 in San Juan Bautista, now Villahermosa, capital of the State of Tabasco.
