Antonino Rojas

Lifespan: (1818 – 1865)

Biography

Antonio Rojas (1818-1865) was a guerrilla soldier born in the Ranch of El Buey, in the municipality of Tepatitlán, Jalisco. During the War of the Reform he joined the liberal ranks and fought in Zacatecas, Jalisco, Colima and Michoacán. He took part in the military take-over of Zacatecas, Fresnillo and Colima. He was distinguished for his bravery and disdain for private property. He secured the defeat of Manuel Lozada in Barranca Blanca and he gained power in Tepic and San Blas. Alongside Epitacio Huerta he achieved various triumphs and became distinguished in the armed cavalry, reaching the rank of colonel. He fought against the French Intervention and Maximilian’s Empire. Rojas successfully attacked Lozada following the orders of the Governor of Jalisco, Pedro Ogazón. When the French and the Imperial authority established martial courts, Rojas launched fierce reprisals during 1863 and 1864. He went on fighting, despite the fall of the republicans in Jalisco and Colima. In December 1864 he made various republican leaders sign the Pact of Zacate-Grullo which was committed to create severe measures against the enemies of the Republic. Rojas died fighting against the French on the Hacienda de Potrerillos, Jalisco.
