José Palomar

Lifespan: (1807 – 1873)

Biography

José Palomar (1807-1873) was a businessman and philanthropist born in the Hacienda of Santa María, Jalisco. He settled at a young age in Guadalajara, dedicating himself to commerce and becoming one of the most important capitalists in the city. He was an industrious and philanthropic man who dedicated himself to helping the poor. He was the chief founder of the spinning and woven cloth factory in Atemajac and of the paper factory of Batan; he collaborated in establishing the telegraphic system of Jalisco; and in the creation of the foundation of Monte de Piedad, the School of Arts and the Union of Charity as well as the Brothers of Charity. He reconstructed the Hospital of Belen and the Hospital and House of Charity of San Felipe. Palomar was affiliated to a moderate Catholic group and he represented Jalisco in 1851 in Congress. He was a defender of the sciences, the arts and literature. He died in Guadalajara and the poor felt the impact of his death deeply.
