Lifespan: (1808 – 1850)
Profession: Regular army officer

Biography

Ignacio Ormaechea (1808-1850) was a soldier born in Mexico City. He served with the royalists and in September 1821 he joined the army of the Three Guarantees. In 1822 he was involved in the organization of the documents of the ministry of war in the archive which later he took charge of. He was a military fiscal inspector, and brigadier general from 1831, serving as a magistrate of the Supreme War tribunal. In 1833 Ormaechea served Santa Anna as his aide-de-camp. He fought for the establishment of hospitals to avoid army desertions during the cholera epidemic. He was chief of the Active Squadron of Tlaxcala in 1837. As military commander of the line of Texmelucan, he organised the military lines of Puebla and Tlaxcala to fight against the U.S. forces in 1846. He retired from service after organizing a brigade in Tlaxcala to combat the U.S. invaders. He was also one time commander general of Tlaxcala and president of Puebla town council as well as congressional deputy. Ormaechea presented a project of law to organise the army. He was commander general of Tlaxcala for three years and later governor and commander general of Coahuila.
