Juan de Orbegoso

Biography

Juan de Orbegoso (1780-1846) was a soldier born in Orihuela, Spain. He joined the armed services in 1791, in the Provincial Regiment of Lorea. When he was dispatched to Mexico he served as military commander of Jalapa. Orbegoso was commissioned by Agustín Iturbide to deal with Juan O’Donojú on his arrival in Veracruz in the summer of 1821. He was spokesperson for the Sovereign Junta and deputy of the Constituent Congress. In 1825 he was commissioned to carry out the military reconnaissance of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. He also served as inspector of the active militia and spokesperson of the Consultative Junta of War. In the pronunciamiento of 1840 he demonstrated his loyalty to General Anastasio Bustamante. He was promoted to division general in 1843. He contributed to the publication El Mosaico Mexicano. Orbegoso died in Mexico City in 1846.
