Profession: Politician

Biography

Francisco Ortega (1793-1849) was born in Mexico City. He graduated in Latin and philosophy and also undertook studies in law. He was employed by the royal mint and was sub-director of the Institute of Science, Ideology and Humanities. Ortega was also deputy in 1822 and he opposed the Imperial project of Iturbide. In 1838 he was senator and in 1841 member of the Commission for Military Statistics. Ortega was entrusted with creating the Geographic Dictionary of the Mexican Republic. He won various prizes for his poetry collection: Poesias líricas (1839). He contributed writings to El Federalista, El Reformador and La Oposición. He created an appendix for the Historia Antigua de Mexico. He translated Alfieri’s Rosmunda. The poetry of Ortega worked with the two main themes of the political and the religious. He was the authour of an invective against Iturbide entitled: ‘Iturbide en su coronación’. On a religious theme he published ‘La venida del Espiritu Santo’. Along with Francisco Sánchez de Tagle and Andrés Quintana Roo, he was one of the precursors of Mexican romanticism.
