José María Ortega

Biography

José María Ortega (1793-1871) was a soldier born in Mexico City who served in the Spanish dragoon regiment. He fought against the insurgents for ten years but in 1821, he joined the army of the three guarantees. He was in charge of the artillery division of General Anastasio Bustamente and in 1822 was commander of the Internal Provinces. In 1830 he acted as chief of the artillery brigade in the South led by General Nicolás Bravo. In 1836 and the following year he was commander of artillery and commander of the Fort of the Alamo in Texas where he fought against the Texan insurrection. Ortega rose to the rank of brigadier general in 1841. He was commander general of Nuevo León from 1844-1846 and of San Luis Potosi in 1847, fighting the invading forces of the United States of America. He retired from the army and died in Mexico City.
