José Antonio Navarro

Lifespan: (1795 – 1870)

Biography

José Antonio Navarro (1795 -1870) was a soldier born in San Antonio Béxar. In spite of being Mexican he advocated the Independence of Texas. Navarro was also chief of the commission the named lands in the district of Béxar (1834-35); he was a signatory in the 1836 Texan Declaration of Independence, and member of the Constituent Convention of the State of Texas. He was taken prisoner by the Mexican forces of Santa Fe, New Mexico (1841-43). The county ‘Navarro’ in the State of Texas, United States of America is named after him.
