Juan Navarro

Lifespan: (1823 – 1904)

Biography

Juan N. Navarro (1823-1904) was a doctor and consultant. Born in Morelia, Michoacán. He studied Latin and philosophy in Valladolid (today Morelia) and graduated as a doctor in Mexico City in January 1847. He participated in politics as a liberal and fought against Santa Anna. In 1847 whilst in action he was taken prisoner in Churubusco. He also became a federal deputy and a teacher in the clinic of the School of Medicine from 1848-1862. Navarro undertook important tasks within the school and was named secretary (1851-1854). He was a member of the Second Academy of Medicine founded in 1851 and in the same year contributed to the academy newspaper Periódico de la Academia, writing articles on sub-clavicular wounds and coronary hypertrophy. Navarro was director of the mental health Hospital of San Hipólito and assisted with the improvement of the inmates’ living conditions. In 1861 he was commissioned by the government of education to establish a maternity hospital and a children’s hospital and undertake research. He did this with Dr. Gabino. Bustamante and proposed that a geriatric hospital was established expounding the great potential of such an institution. Benito Juárez endorsed the study and Congress decreed the founding of the children’s and maternity hospital according to Dr. Navarro’s plans. Nevertheless these plans did not materialize because of the French Intervention (1862-67). Navarro was head of the military medical corps when he was taken prisoner by the French in Puebla in May 1863. He managed to escape and presented himself to President Juárez in San Luis Potosí where he was named General Consul of Mexico and New York from 4 September 1863 until his death on 25 September 1904. He was also a poet known for his emotive and elegant style. He collaborated on El Museo Mexicano and other publications of the period. He did not publish a collection of poetry although his work appears in the collection of poems edited by Mariano de Jesus Torres, Morelia, 1907Parnaso michoacano or Anthology of Michoacán Poets. He died in New York on 25 September 1904.
