Ignacio Mora y Villamil

Biography

Ignacio Mora y Villamil (1791-1870) was a soldier born in Mexico City. In 1821 he joined the forces of Agustín de Iturbide. He created a ‘General Plan of the Republic’ and was director of the engineering corps. He was a congressional deputy (1825-1826) and minister of war (20 October – 22 Nov 1837). Benito Quijano commissioned Mora y Villamil to negotiate an armistice with Winfield Scott during the 1847 Campaign of the Valley of Mexico. He wrote a treaty on the fortification, attack and defense of military garrison. After being an advisor to Miguel Miramón he became an imperialist.
