Tomas Marín (Veracruz)

Lifespan: (1805 – 1873)
Profession: Regular navy officer

Biography

Tomas Marín (1805-1873) was a sailor. He was born in Guadalupe, Hidalgo, now part of Mexico City. In 1854 he became a Squadron Leader. He fought on the side of the conservatives during the War of the Reform (1858-61). In 1859 he was sent to Havana by General Miguel Miramón to acquire boats to besiege a flotilla in Veracruz. Marín fetched the boats that were assigned to attack the port by sea whilst Miramón attacked by land. This maneuver failed due to the intervention of the U.S. navy. He was then taken to New Orleans along with the captured boats where a tribunal absolved him on the grounds that his capture took place on waters under Mexican jurisdiction. Marín promptly returned to fight alongside the conservative forces. He died in the City of Jalapa, Veracruz.
