José Antonio Mozo

Biography

José Antonio Mozo (1787-1847) was a sailor born in Cuba. In 1804 he joined the Spanish marine guards. He was initially dispatched to New Spain to fight the insurgent forces. However, in August 1821 he joined the Army of the Three Guarantees. He stayed in Mexico after the triumph of Independence. In September that year he received the artillery train in the capital and in December he was sent to Veracruz to arm cannon gunboats. He was director of the armoury and chief commander of the artillery of Guadalajara, Mexico City and Veracruz. He was also military commander of Veracruz. Mozo also served as governor and commander general of the Departments of Jalisco, Puebla and Mexico City. He defended Anastasio Bustamante’s government during the movement of la Ciudadela in 1841. He died in Mexico City.
