José Vicente Miñón

Biography

José Vicente Miñón (1802-1878) was a soldier born in Cádiz, Spain. He moved to Mexico whilst in the service of the Spanish Government. In 1821 he supported the iturbidista movement. He took part in the battles of Arroyo Hondo and Azcapotzalco. He was with the Army of the Three Guarantees when they entered the Capital on their march of triumph. In 1851 he was Commander General of Querétaro and the following year of Oaxaca. Arista chose him to fight the pronunciados of Jalisco and Michoacán in 1852. He left Tehuantepec with 3,460 men and 22 pieces of artillery but failed to take Guadalajara. As a result his relationship with Arista broke down. He recognized the Empire of Maximilian (1864-67) and died in Mexico City.
