José Márquez (San Luis Potosí )

Lifespan: (? – 1830)

Biography

José Márquez (1787?-1830) was a royalist Colonel in the War of Independence. He went on to serve with the militia of San Luis Potosí during the invasion of Isidro Barradas in 1829.

Having supported the Acta de San Luis Potosí of 19 December 1829 which backed the Plan of Jalapa of 4 December 1829 resulting in the overthrow of Guerrero’s government, he instigated a year later the pronunciamiento in San Luis Potosí of 17 November 1830 in favour of the deposed Vicente Guerrero against Anastasio Bustamante.

He was apprehended by troops loyal to Bustamante’s government and shot later that same day.
