Biography

Antonio Leon was a royalist officer from Oaxaca before becoming a colonel in the Army of the Three Guarantees in 1821. He went on to become a prominent figure in the regional politics of Oaxaca as the region's commander general, and served as a congressional deputy in 1832. He pronounced on several occasions, the first time from Huajuapan, on 14 January 1823, against Emperor Agustin I, and in favour of the Plan of Veracruz of 2 December 1822. His military campaigns included pacifying the Mixtecas between 1834 and 1837, and Chiapas in 1838. He was also involved in the adquisition of the Guatemalan region of Soconusco in 1842. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1843. Leon led the Oaxacan forces in the Mexican-American War (1846-48) and died in combat in the battle of Molino del Rey on 8 September 1847.
