Lifespan: (1830 – 1917)
Profession: Regular army officer

Biography

Juan Francisco Lucas (1830-1917) was a soldier born in Comaltepec (Zacapoaxtla), (Puebla). He was an Indian of the ‘Sierra de Puebla’, where there existed a large number of partisans. During the French Intervention (1862-67) he enlisted in the National Guard and he was captain of the 16th Battalion during the battle of 5 May. At this time he met up with the Indians of Zacapoaxtla, he fought heroically and is thought to have been a strong factor in the securing of victory. He continued fighting against the imperialists and in 1865 he attained the rank of Brigadier General. He retired from the army and died in Xochiapulco, (Puebla) in 1917.
