Francisco Jiménez (Jalisco)

Biography

Francisco Jiménez (1824-1881) was born in Mexico City. He joined the Military College as a cadet in 1841. He took part in the war of 1847 and was taken prisoner. Jiménez was a member and secretary of the commission of border limits between Mexico and the United States of America. He became a geographical engineer in 1856 and in 1861 he was chosen along with the engineer García Cubas to make the national map of the Republic. He was head of the Ministry of Public Works in 1866. Jiménez was professor of geodesy and astronomy in the Military College. He was part of the research team who observed the passing of Venus over the Sun in Japan. He was director of the Central Astronomy Observatory in 1877. He also wrote upon themes of geography and astronomy.
