José Jerónimo Hernández

Profession: Lawyer, politician

Biography

José Jerónimo Hernández was a lawyer born in Durango at the end of the eighteenth-century. In 1827 he participated in Governor Santiago Baca Ortiz’s state government. In 1847 he became deputy of the local congress. He was named state governor but he did not take up this post or that of interim governor from 3 May – 8 June 1848 in place of Marcelino Castañeda. Although Hernández was not able to take up the position, in November 1848 he did act as governor up until 30 April 1849, and again from 6 August-25 November 1850 and 12 March – 1 December 1851. He acted as local deputy in 1859 and he was congress secretary when Santos Degollado named Colonel Miguel Cruz governor during the War of the Reforma. Hernández died shortly after this.
