Biography

Diego García Conde (1760-1822) was born in Barcelona, Cataluña. The name García Conde is famed in Mexican History for the magnificent piano that he brought to the metropolis in 1793. He moved on from second lieutenant in the Royal Guard to captain in the regiment of dragoons of Mexico and moved up rapidly through the military ranks from captain of the provincial regiment of the dragoons of Puebla. During the war of Independence he fought against the insurgent forces. He was Commander General of the Province of Zacatecas. He was also division general in 1822. He composed a number of songs in praise of the royalist forces. García Conde directed the construction of the road reaching from Veracruz to Jalapa and the bridge Puente del Rey or Puente Nacional over the Antigua River. On 12 January 1822 he was made Director General of the Engineering Corps and in this same year he founded and became Director General of the Academy of Cadets: the Colegio Militar.
