Profession: Politician

Biography

Enrique Grimarest (1791-1873) was a soldier born in Arizpe (Sonora). In 1802 he was a cadet in the Dragoon Regiment of Spain. He took part in the actions of Acapulco, Oaxaca and Cuautla during the War of Independence. He joined the famed army of the Three Guarantees (Ejército Trigarante) in 1821. He took an active role in the Plan of José María Lobato of 23 January 1824. In 1826 he left military life to take up the position of assistant to the President of the Republic. He also became governor of the National Palace in Mexico City but again in 1843, he withdrew from this role. In the Junta de Notables, selected by President Mariano Paredes y Arrillaga, Grimarest was representative for Sonora. During the American Invasion of 1847 he fought in the defence of Chapultepec. As a conservative politician he seconded the 1858 Plan de Navidad of Félix María Zuloaga Trillo. He was a Knight of the Order of Guadalupe. Grimarest died in Mexico City.
