Coronel Cirilo Gómez Anaya

Biography

Cirilo Gómez Anaya (1780-1861) was a soldier born in Lagos (Jalisco). He studied in the Betlemitas College in Mexico City. He joined the royalist army in 1810 and was General Negrete’s aide de camp up until 1820. In May of the same year he was designated as Secretary to the Viceroy and was responsible for helping Iturbide with the independence movement. On 9 July 1821 he joined the army of the Three Guarantees. Gómez Anaya was Deputy to the General Congress. In 1823 he put forward the idea of the creation of a State with the capital being Lagos. He was military commander of Durango in 1829 and in 1831 of Jalisco. He was also Minister of War from 21 October – 24 December 1832) under Melchor Múzquiz’s interim presidency and again from 8 – 30 January 1833 under the presidency of General Manuel Gómez Pedraza. He became a distinguished figure in the Conservative Party. Gómez Anaya’s life ended in 1861.
