Antonio Gaona

Biography

Antonio Gaona (1793-1848) was a soldier and royalist born in Havana, Cuba. He joined the military academy as a very young cadet in the regiment of New Spain in 1801. He ascended up the military ranks in various military posts. He fought against the insurgents for a period of almost 10 years. He supported the Plan of Iguala in 1821. He was governor of the fortress of San Juan de Ulúa during the French Pastry War in 1838. He also fought against the rebel Texans during the 1836 Texan Campaign and in the Mexican American War (1846-48). He became Brigadier General in 1832. His life ended in Mexico City in 1848.
