Biography

José María Flores (1818-1866) was a soldier born in Saltillo, Coahuila. He began his military career at twelve years of age. He was made a captain in 1846 and commissioned to Alta California. This region was invaded by the North Americans and Flores led the resistance. In October when they attacked Los Angeles he was named Chief Politician and Military Commander. Men, women and children joined him in his defense of the region forcing the invaders to retreat and return with General Philip Kearny and reinforcements in January 1847 to finally compel him to evacuate. Chief of military arms in Sonora in 1851, he marched with the National Guard up to Rio Gila to oust the U.S. adventurers who had invaded the national territory. In Hermosillo Flores fought the French forces led by Raousset; he won the battle of Las Avispas and returned to fight in July 1854. During the invasion of William Walker, he sent auxiliary troops to Baja California. He served under the conservative governments of presidents Félix Zuloaga and Miguel Miramón and also the Empire. He died in Mazatlán, Sinaloa.
