Lifespan: (1801 – 1862)

Biography

José Agustín Escudero (1801-1862) was a lawyer and historian, born in Parral, Chihuahua. Here he undertook his primary education before moving to the capital city of Chihuahua where he qualified in his profession. He was a high-ranking official in the national government, judge of the press, governor, magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice and district judge in his State for over 10 years. He was also deputy and senator for Chihuahua in a number of federal legislatures, employing his intelligence to energetically defend local interests. As congressional deputy in 1847 Escudero was strongly against the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which brought the Mexican-American War (1846-48) to an end. Later in 1848 he published his memoirs which included documents justifying his conduct in congress. He also published studies on the states of Durango, Chihuahua, Nuevo León, Sonora and Nuevo Mexico which included information on customs, language, locality, and resources. He also annotated the second edition of Noticias Históricas y Estadísticas de la Antigua Provincia de Nuevo México (Mexico, 1849). He was also Minister of the Supreme Court and the Supreme Tribunal of War. Escudero died in Mexico City.
