Biography

Miguel María Echegaray (1816-1891) was a soldier born in Jalapa, Veracruz. He took part in the battles of Molino del Rey and Chapultepec in 1847. In 1855 he was in the army in Colima. In 1858 he launched the Plan de Navidad. Echegaray joined the government to fight against the French Intervention in 1862 and when General Uraga defected he was left in charge of the resistance up until 21 July 1864. Echegaray was eventually defeated at Jiquilpan, and following the fall of Ciudad Guzmán (Zapotlán el Grande) to the French in January 1865, he gave himself in on 8 February. Thereafter Echegaray was director of the Penitentiary of Salamanca in Guanajuato. By the mid-1870s he was a defender of José María Iglesias’s faction. He died in Mexico City in 1891.
